Note: This backstory was written at the end of the Sumeru archon quest. I haven't finished the Fontaine quests yet so this backstory may be a bit outdated!

The Fatui have a word for outlanders who come from outside the world of Teyvat but “descend” to live in it and are therefore not affected by this world in the same way. The First descender was the primordial one, Phanes. There are supposed to be four in total. However, there is one that is unaccounted for. Mainly, because all traces of their existence was erased by the second who came. All traces but one.
Originally, the world of Teyvat was inhabited by dragons. Seven sovereign dragons, one for each element, resided over the world and all that was in it. However, this changed with the descent of the Primordial One. The Primordial One descended upon Teyvat from another world and after a long battle, defeated the dragons, and started the world anew. To their subjects, the Primordial One was a kind and benevolent ruler who brought prosperity to the land
That is until the Second Who Came arrived
Like with the dragons, the Primordial One clashed with this new Descender for the throne, and eventually emerged victorious. But after this battle, something about the Primordial One changed. They were no longer kind and benevolent, but rather they turned on them all. They destroyed all which they had created, starting everything in Teyvat anew.
The unaccounted descender arrived in between the Primordial One and the Heavenly Principles, the true second who came.
A great feathered serpent, with eyes like fire, glowing like the rays of the sun.
The first Tonatiuhcoatl, who fell directly from the sun.
From there the Tonatiuhcoatl grew in number in Teyvat. Despite originally coming from the sun, they thrived in the land of Natlan, forming a great civilization. The Tonatiuhcoatl were skilled in many things, they were great warriors and excelled at magic, most being naturally adept in manipulating the element of pyro.
Their civilization prospered, until one day.
There once was a great god, Orobashi, who ruled over Watatsumi Island in Inazuma.
One day, Orobashi learned a secret of Teyvat, a secret that Celestia had declared forbidden for anyone to know and for this, he was sentenced to death and was executed by the god Raiden Ei.
This secret was that the Primodial One had in fact, lost the battle with the Second Who Came, and they had usurped the throne of Celestia from them.
The Tonatiuhcoatl race learned of this secret one day and it quickly spread across their civilization among their people. However, they hid the fact that they knew this from Celestia, and in secret planned to overthrow the usurper who had stolen the throne.
In the end however, they were discovered and Celestia sentenced the entire Tonatiuhcoatl race to death.

The Tonatiuhcoatl fought back, holding Celestia off for years on end, something that should have been impossible.
The first Tonatiuhcoatl, now known as Tematlalehua clashed with the Second who Came, the true second vs the false second.
But they could not hold them off forever. The strength of the tonatiuhcoatl was great but it couldn't possibly outlast the unending onslaught of Celestia. Slowly, the tonatiuhcoatl numbers thinned and eventually Tematlalehua was slain and the rest of the Tonatiuhcoatl were put to death.
As Tematlalehua lay dying, a young Tonatiuhcoatl was born within the civilization they had built. A civilization they had created with their own two hands, now crumbling and detoriorating around them. And as Tematlalehua’s eyes shut for the final time, the young sun serpent’s eyes opened to gaze at the world for the first time.

Time was running out for the Tonatiuhcoatl civilization. As Celestia itself ravaged everything in it’s path, it seemed there was nothing that could be done, nothing that could be saved.
A young Tonatiuhcoatl was born today, one that did not yet know pain or suffering, an innocent being that had not yet even experienced having the rays of the sun they originally came from on their face.
The tonatiuhcoatl was intended to be spared from suffering Celestia’s wrath, in the only way possible.
The child was lowered into the caldera of a volcano, being left to sink within the magma pool. Without sunlight, a tonatiuhcoatl would perish and any end that was not at the hands of Celestia would be more merciful than this.
However, as the young serpent sunk into the magma (being a tonatiuhcoatl who was meant to swim in seas of solar plasma, this was more akin to being lowered into a warm bath) they instead entered a deep sleep. The sun sank in the sky and rose again, civilizations were born and fell, wars started and ended, and the tonatiuhcoatl remained asleep in the heart of the magma chamber, slowly maturing as the centuries passed.
And one fateful day, the sun rose in the sky, and so did the tonatiuhcoatl asleep within the volcano. No longer were they a child and no longer was the world resembling anything they had been born into.
